I had the good fortune to be able to spend the day in Sestriere (Italy) to watch the 20th stage of the Giro d’Italia.
Having been to the Tour de France, experienced the excitement and seen the crowd control, I must admit I was surprised by the general lack of Carabinieri (Italian Police) on the course and by the very chilled attitude of the event.
There were the a few larrikins about, as was evidenced by the Viking jockey pictured below, but most decided to chill by the side of the road with some choosing to bring their dog with them (also pictured below). What really astonished me, apart from the racing that is, was that, while the race was still in progress, spectators could get on their bikes and ride up or down the road the Giro was travelling on. You definitely couldn’t do that in the Tour de France – I’m pretty sure you’d get arrested very quickly if you tried.
