Most people are familiar with classical portraits however a Sports Portrait is something that’s relatively unknown. Today I’ll give you a little information on what is a sports portrait and will, of course, include some examples below.
A sports portrait is a portrait that enables sports people, from amateurs through to professionals, to express their passion for their sport. The shoots can be held in the sporting arena or in a studio, with or without props.
There’s no age or skill requirements for a sports portrait however, if you want to incorporate technical poses (eg movements from your sport) into the photos, a degree of sporting expertise would be helpful. Below you’ll see sports portraits of athletes as young as 9 all the way through to 50+.
Sports Portrait Styles
Sports portraits come in a variety of styles, with the sport and the athlete’s personality determining the look of the photos. The photos can be:
- dark and gritty;
- beautiful and elegant;
- competitive;
- creative; or
- fun;
Figure skaters, gymnasts or cheerleaders might go for a beautiful and elegant style, whereas fighters, footballers and other contact sports might want to go for a harder style.
Come alone or with teammates
You can come in and have a solo session or you can bring a couple of teammates along for a more interactive session.
Next week’s blog will cover how to prepare yourself for your Sports Portrait shoot but until then enjoy the photos below and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions ☺
