As I watch my little girl looking through our photo albums, I am reminded of how I used to do this when I was a child. She stops and looks at all the photos, pointing out the people in the photos and telling me about what she remembers about the moment when these photos were taken – she never ceases to amaze me with all the little detail she remembers. She really enjoys going through the albums and there’s just something about sitting down paging a photo album that brings back lots of memories in a way that looking at photos on a screen doesn’t.
I’m not sure if it’s as a result of us taking so many more photos than when we were kids (selfie anyone?) but we often scroll through the photos without really looking at them and don’t seem to appreciate the photos in the same way as if we’re looking at a tangible photo.
In this blog article, I’ll be going over some of the reasons why I think it’s important to have printed, tangible photos.
Why you should print your images
I truly believe that it’s really important to print your photos – not all of them but definitely the ones that hold sentimental value to you. Let’s start with the key reasons why I believe it’s important to print your images
- Because your children grow up so fast.
- Because you can touch and feel your memories.
- Because so many photos get lost, or even worse, deleted off of old hard drives.
- Because your parents and grandparents won’t be around forever.
- Because your prints are for today, tomorrow and all the tomorrows after that.
- Because a USB key in a drawer is pointless.
- Because there’s nothing like sitting down and flipping through the pages of a family album.
- Because, unless you’re like me and you spend hours cataloguing your photos and keywording them on your computer, it can be nearly impossible to find that photo you’re looking for when you want or need to see it.
How to hang your photos without putting holes in your walls
Having photos on your walls that display the important people in your lives (and I’m definitely not talking about your boss here) helps you feel close to them and gives children a sense of security. When they see themselves in photos with their mum and dad (and the rest of the family), they identify themselves as part of the family unit and they get a sense of belonging.
I love walking in a room and seeing photos of my family hanging on the wall it makes me feel closer to them. This is especially important for parents whose children are all grown up and no longer live with them and for those whose family lives far away.
A friend once told me that they don’t hang photos of their family on the walls of their home as they don’t want to “show off”. This statement really shocked me as I feel that you should hang what’s important to you on your walls and what’s more important than your family?
I would rather see photos that have sentimental value to me hanging on my walls than see art I’ve purchased in a gallery that looks nice but to which I have no emotional attachment.
How to hang your photos without putting holes in your walls
I understand that hanging photos on your walls can be difficult sometimes, especially if you are living in a rental property, but did you know there’s a way to hang your photos without creating holes in the wall? 3M Command have a range of hooks and other adhesive products that don’t leave any trace on the walls if you remove them in the correct way. I have used these products for nearly 20 years now and I have never had one fail on me, they’ve never removed any paint or caused any damage and I still use some of the original hooks. They are also relatively easy to find. You can buy them at your local hardware store (yes even in France although not every hardware store will stock them) and online.
Other options for printing your photos
Printing your photos doesn’t only mean hanging photos on the wall even if this is the easiest way to appreciate your photos every day. You can also create albums to record special moments of your lives or have albums that grow over time to document the growth of your family. You can also print individual prints that you can either keep in a box to flip through from time to time or to place in little frames and put on your dresser.
